On Sunday, 4th October, Kraków’s newest Wisła crossing, the long awaited Kazimierz–Ludwinów footbridge opened.
The bridge has been a long time coming. The design by Lewicki Łatak won the design competition way back in 2006, and the opening date slipped, many times over the past 2 decades, before it finally arrived.
The new bridge will create a pedestrian and cyclist link between Ludwinów-Podgórze and Kazimierz, though the project attracted objections and controversy in relation to it’s appearance, location, felling of trees, concreting, disruption, potential imapct on the UNESCO status & more.
The bridge, which cost around 120 million zł, is 130 m long and 13.6 m wide.
The pedestiran middle span has a short lower section, close to the water, below the main level and rises 16m (53ft) above the water level, to a view point – a “sinusoidal” (wave-like) design – complete with benches, to enjoy views of the river and surroundings. Cyclists and pedestrians each have dedicated ‘level’ outer spans.
The opening ceremony began after sunset. Once the official handover was done, the Hejnał Mariacki was played from the upper span and the bridge lit up in white and blue. The crowds who had waited patiently on nboth sides of the bridge, filled the bulwars on both banks, then made their way across, and climbed the steps to the upper viewpoint.
The bridge links Bulwar Inflancki in Kazimierz with Bulwar Wołyński in Ludwinów, giving walkers and cyclists a more direct route between two parts of the city.
If you’re in Kraków, take a walk down to the rive and check it out It’s also worth seeing at different times of day, since the view of the river and area changes with the light, as does the bridge when it’s illuminated after dark.
