A full scale investigation by prosecutors and other authorities has been launched following yesterday’s tragic crane accident.  Witness video and meteorology radar data suggests that there may have been a mini tornado in the vicinity of the crane.

Investigation Underway
Works have been halted at the building site where prosecuting authorities, Police and fire service were still present at the site, along with health and safety and other investigators, including National Labour Inspectorate (Państwowej Inspekcji Pracy) and the Poviat Building Supervision Inspectorate (Powiatowego Inspektoratu Nadzoru Budowlanego)

Initial Findings
According to initial findings made at the scene, a construction site of multi-family buildings under construction at ul. Domagały, Krakow, the crane, located between the buildings, fell over onto one of the buildings.  The falling arm of the crane struck and injured the construction workers on the roof of the building and those standing next to the building.

Inspection of Cranes across Małopolska
After the crane accident at os. Złocień, the Voivode of Małopolska, Łukasz Kmita, announced that all cranes  in the Voivodeship were to be inspected as a matter of urgency. Małopolska inspectors have carried out a total of 27 building site inspections where cranes are part of the construction. The inspections continue.

Statement by Developer
The developer, the Murapol group, has also issued a statement:-

“The tower crane overturned as a result of a violent gust of wind and the accompanying sudden weather phenomena, despite the fact that due to the RCB alerts, tower cranes were excluded from work at all construction sites of the Murapol Group throughout Poland and put into a safe so-called wind mode “ .

The developer added that they were co-operating with the authorities and providing them with all necessary information in order to investigate the causes of the accident.  At the same time, the company expressed its condolences to the families of the people who died.

The IMGW (Institute of Meteorology and Water Management) have today issued a further sms ‘RCB Alert‘ for strong winds, advising people to stay at home
