Roadworks to cause major long term disruption

TRAFFIC & TRAM DISRUPTION IN CITY CENTRE

Prepare for long term traffic and public transport disruption at a number of locations across the city centre.  The city roads authority have announced 5 major road and tram roadwork projects, beginning in March, continuing in stages throughout 2025 and 2026 until the end of 2027.

The planned roadworks include replacing the tram tracks on Franciszkańska Street, renovating the Grunwaldzki Bridge, rebuilding the tram junctions on Piłsudskiego Street and Bagatela Theatre, and modernising Starowiślna Street.

Whilst the city’s intention is to coordinate the works in order to minimise traffic disruptions, the locations are all at major junctions on main roads, making it next to impossible to avoid chaos.

The first works will start in March beginning with the renovation of the track on Franciszkańska Street, which is expected to be completed during the Summer holidays. Work on the Grunwaldzki Bridge will start at the same time and will last nine months.

The next stage includes the reconstruction of the tram junction on Piłsudskiego Street, which will be completed by the end of the year. This will be followed by work at the Bagatela Theatre and part of Karmelicka Street. The last investment is the modernisation of Starowiślna Street, which the roads department (ZDMK) plans to implement between June 2026 and October 2027.

Ulica Franciszkanska
The planned works on Franciszkańska Street include the replacement of tracks from Grodzka (from the “Plac Wszystkich Świętych” stop) to the “Filharmonia” junction. The works will be divided into stages and will involve the temporary closure of the street to general traffic, while ensuring access to the properties.

Most Grunwaldzki
The ageing Grunwaldzki Bridge, built in 1972,  requires major structural work. inspections have revealed it is in poor technical condition with estimates that it will require to be completely rebuilt by 2038.

Expert opinion indicates that in order to ensure its safe use at least until 2038, it is necessary to carry out extensive repair work, no later than August 2026, to ensure safe use of the crossing for years to come – until the new bridge is built.

The works will require the facility to be closed to car traffic for at least eight months. The bridge will also be unavailable for public transport for six months.

Tram junction on Pilsudskiego
The reconstruction and modernisation of the tram junction at Piłsudskiego Street and Straszewskiego Street, on the section from the pedestrian crossing at Smoleńsk Street to the intersection of Straszewskiego and Piłsudskiego Streets, as well as on Piłsudskiego Street, from the “UJ – AST” stop to Straszewskiego Street.

The investment will include the construction of a ‘Viennese’ tram stop (przystanek wiedeński) where the road is raised to the level of the footpath which allows for easier and safer passenger access and slows traffic.  Road traffic on Straszewskiego Street will be maintained in both directions.

Tram junction at Bagatela Theatre
The scope of works at the Bagatela junction and on Karmelicka Street includes the reconstruction of the junction and the modernisation of the section of Karmelicka Street from the Bagatela Theatre to Garbarska Street. The tram track will be made of prefabricated slabs with an integrated granite paving.

Starowislna
Starowiślna will be rebuilt on the section from the junction with Dietla to the Powstańców Śląskich Bridge – the works will include modernisation of the track, roadway, footpaths, drainage and lighting systems.

The junctions of Podgórska with św. Wawrzyńca and Halicka will be rebuilt into a roundabout and the Powstańców Śląskich Bridge will be renovated.
