Everyone likes going to the movies, but even better when the cinema is in the open air, under the stars. Kraków has no shortage of choices to enjoy outdoor cinema, during the long hot Summer days.

This years letnie Projektor, has the theme ‘Water’ which explains why various riverside locations have been chosen for the free screenings. A joint venture by Stowarzyszenie Archipelagi Kultury and The US Consulate General in Kraków.

KINO LETNIE- GALERIA KRAKOWSKA
Organised by Galeria Krakowska, with screenings in the square in front of the shopping centre and train station. With seats for 350 people, the programme includes cult movies, with comfortable chairs in a unique atmosphere. Admission is free.

Bal in Zablocie also has a series of films in their summer garden. You can vote on the film to be shown on the Sunday screening at the BALowe Kino Plenerowe Facebook Group. Free admission.

As well as those main events, other smaller venues will be providing outdoor cinema for your enjoyment, just google Kino Letnie Kraków (summer cinema) or Kino Plenerowe Kraków (outdoor cinema).
Keep in mind that ‘foreign’ films are often dubbed, where the dialogue is read out in Polish, over the film soundtrack, by a ‘Lector’, rather than having subtitles which are more common elsewhere. Please check out the film language and if it is dubbed or subtitled, otherwise, non-Polish speakers may be in for a disappointment. Unfortunately, whilst this information is mostly easy to find at regular cinemas, it was less obvious for most of the outdoor cinema listings. Good Luck, and don’t forget the popcorn.
Why Dubbing? – Not sure if it’s true, but we’ve been lead to believe that the dubbing dates back to times when the authorities were more strict regarding censorship, and having a ‘lector’ allowed control over what was translated or dubbed.
Not sure why the dubbing continues today, however some people like the lectors and have their favourites, but personally we think the delivery of dialogue by a single person, loses much of the impact and nuances from the original soundtrack from the actors, especially in more dramatic or sensitive scenes. As well, of course as making it more difficult for non-Polish speakers to enjoy the movie!
