KED, being of Scottish origin, submitted their own design back in April, which we are delighted to say has made it to the shortlist. We are hesitant to canvass for support, but let’s just say we believe that Tartan no. 3, look’s fabulous and would be a worthy winner, in our humble, albeit slightly biased opinion !  If you happen to agree, please do vote for it!

In April, the Scottish Polish Cultural Association and the City of Kraków launched a contest to design a tartan for the city of Kraków, in recognition of the 22 year partnership between the cities of Edinburgh and Kraków.

The competition, proposed by the Scottish Polish Cultural Association, is a part of the Scottish Polish Tartan Festival: Scottish Tartan for Kraków,  which will culminate in two days of events in Kraków on 30th September/1st October.

The winning design will be woven in Scotland into fabric and presented to a representative of the City of Kraków during the two day Scottish Polish Tartan Festival: Scottish Tartan for Kraków (30/9-1/10/17)

The Scottish Polish Tartan Festival: Scottish Tartan for Kraków is organised by the Scottish Polish Cultural Association in collaboration with the City of Edinburgh Council, Kraków City Council, the Consul General of the Republic of Poland in Edinburgh.h, DC Dalgliesh, Scotweb.co.uk, Polish Cultural Festival Association and the Polish Society at the University of Edinburgh.

Scottish Polish Tartan Festival: Scottish Tartan for Kraków
Whilst the city partnership between Kraków and Edinburgh has been in existence, promoting cultural links, since 1995, this year see’s the inaugural Scottish Polish Tartan Festival: Scottish Tartan for Kraków organised by the Scottish Polish Cultural Association, in collaboration with the City of Edinburgh Council, Kraków City Council, the Consul General of the Republic of Poland in Edinburgh, Polish Cultural Festival Association, scotweb.co.uk, and DC Dalgliesh.

The tartan design contest launches the festival with supporting events and workshops in Edinburgh and Kraków culminating in a two day celebration of events in Kraków on 30th September – 1st October 2017, which will include bagpipe concerts, highland dancing performances, talks, and picnics, all of which will celebrate Scottish culture and heritage of tartan in Kraków.

Scottish-Polish Heritage & History
Aside from the city partnership, there have been for centuries, and continue to be many links between Scotland and Poland, historically and currently.  Poles are the largest minority in Scotland, where they have been welcomed as ‘New Scot’s’, generations after the post war Poles who made Scotland their home.

Kraków Expats Directory, will be supporting and promoting the tartan festival, not least as we are a symbol of the continuing Scottish/Polish links.  We also plan to publish a series of articles on the historical links as well as features on Scots in Poland and Poles in Scotland.

Following the festival in September, the Cities of Kraków and Edinburgh together with the Scottish Polish Cultural Association and other partners, are already planning to continue, into 2018 and beyond, with further events and initiatives building on the partnership and tartan festival.
