Theunis Viljoen – Je suis Paris – Krakow Photo Fringe 2016

12th May 2016 @ 00:00 - 26th May 2016 @ 00:00

Theunis Viljoen is a member of the Royal Photographic Society working and living in Krakow. He specializes in black and white, architecture and street photography focusing on people and their environment.

Having travelled to Paris frequently during the last 2 years he was, along with the rest of the world moved by recent terror attacks against the cornerstones of its democracy – liberty, equality and fraternity.

The Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen of 1789 defined liberty as being able to do anything that does not harm others: thus, the exercise of the natural rights of every man or woman has no bounds other than those that guarantee other members of society the enjoyment of these same rights.

The first image of an illuminated Metro sign in Paris was taken one peaceful and romantic autumn evening in November 2015. Less than 2 weeks later, Paris was shaken by the attacks on 13 November by fundamental Islamic terrorists.

The images curated for this exhibition focus on iconic landmarks, public spaces and the freedom of movement and expression the city offers and embraces juxtaposed with a stark reminder of the alternative…
