Zapraszamy na dyskusję wokół książki “Folk”, w której udział wezmą Aaron Schuman i James Brown. Spotkanie poprowadzi Aga Dwernicka.

Swoją książkę zatytułowaną “FOLK” Aaron Schuman poświęca Muzeum Etnograficznemu w Krakowie – a ściślej jego zbiorom, wystawom oraz specyficznym dla tej placówki zwyczajom i kulturze – odnosząc się do niego przez pryzmat osobistego doświadczenia. Pod pewnym względem publikacja ta skupia się na regionalnym i kulturalnym dziedzictwu przodków autora, choć zarazem w równym stopniu dotyczy sposobu, w jaki spuścizna ta została zebrana, zachowana, zarchiwizowana, udokumentowana i przedstawiona środkami etnograficznymi, uwzględniając też rolę, którą w tym procesie odegrało Muzeum Etnograficzne w Krakowie. Łącząc w sobie zrobione przez Schumana zdjęcia eksponatów muzealnych oraz materiały pochodzące ze zbiorów muzeum, FOLK stanowi studium swoistych dla Muzeum Etnograficznego w Krakowie tradycji, historii, archiwów, artefaktów oraz ustanowionych przez ostatnie stulecie praktyk – to opowieść o ciekawości, samodoświadczeniu oraz kształtowaniu się historii i pamięci. Narracja osobista przeplatana jest elementami konserwacji i dokumentacji, przedstawiając własną i zaangażowaną emocjonalnie interpretację przyświecającego muzeum motto bycia „miejscem myślenia, rozumienia siebie oraz innych”.

We invite you to the discussion about the “FOLK” book with Aaron Schuman and James Brown. The meeting will be led by Aga Dwernicka.

In “FOLK”, Aaron Schuman explores the Ethnographic Museum in Krakow—its collections and exhibits, as well as its own distinct customs and culture—via his own personal history. In one sense, the book focuses specifically on the regional and cultural heritage of Schuman’s forefathers, but equally considers the ways in which this heritage has been collected, preserved, archived, documented and represented via the field of ethnography, and within the Ethnographic Museum in Krakow itself. Bringing together Schuman’s own photographs of the museum’s collection and images from its vast archive, “FOLK” is an examination of the Ethnographic Museum’s own traditions, history, archives, artifacts and practices over the course of the last century; it represents a story of curiosity, self-discovery and the forging of both history and memory. Personal narrative is interwoven with preservation and documentation, as Schuman wholeheartedly embraces the museum’s stated mission of being a “centre of reflection and understanding, of both ourselves and others.”
